RS Asia eRacng Winter Season’s finale was held at the Shanghai International Circuit last Friday and it was a thriller. After some of the best actions of the season, Hong Kong’s Ho Sek Yin made a complete turnaround in the last race and became the Champion in Clio Cup.
Before the start of the last 2 rounds in Shanghai, the top 3 drivers in Clio Cup were only separated by 4 points with China’s Tianyang Zhang as the leader at 94 points. Wenchao Zhong, also from China, and Ho Sek Yin were both on 91. All three of them will have a real shot to the championship.
After the Qualifying session, it became clear that it will become a two-horse race between Zhang and Ho as Wenchao Zhong lacked the pace to challenge the other two. SGAN Motorsports’ Alex Wang took pole and led the way in Race 1. Tianyang Zhang from Tea Party Team followed comfortably in 2nd place and Ho Sek Yin was locked in a race-long battle with Sheldon Chong for 3rd. In the middle of the race, Ho has to surrender his place to Chong and fell to 4th. With Tianyang Zhang looked set to finish in 2nd and pull out the points lead, Ho’s championship challenge was set to took a hit. However, in the very last lap of the race, Chong made a spectacular “Drift pass” on Zhang and took 2nd from him. This completed a SGAN Motorsport 1-2 in this race with Alex Wang winning and Chong 2nd. Tianyang Zhang 3rd and Ho Sek Yin 4th, so Zhang’s lead towards Ho was extended to 7 points. But with 30 more points to grab, there was all the play for in the last round of the season.
In the reverse-grid Race 2, Terrance Lallave from the Philippines started from pole but he plummeted down the order after a poor getaway. SGAN Motorsports’ Max Li took the lead and Wenchao Zhong followed in 2nd. Ho Sek Yin quickly sliced through the field and was pursuing for the lead group. In Contrast, championship leader Tianyang Zhang was stuck behind in 7th and his championship looked to be in danger. G.O.D. Team’s Ho was clearly on a mission as he overtook both Zhong and Li in quick succession and took a sizeable lead at the front. With Ho winning, Tianyang Zhang must finish 2nd to keep his championship but he was still stuck in 6th in half distance. While he tried to get around the plummeting Wenchao Zhong in lap 4, he was forced off track and lost a whole lot of time as his championship hope was a real jeopardy. Zhang never recovered from that and Ho Sek Yin’s fightback was a great success as he took victory in the race as well as the overall Championship. SGAN Motorsports’ Sheldon Chong and Max Li completed the podium. Season-long championship leader Tianyang Zhang could only finish 6th in the race and lost out to the championship by 10 points, while Wenchao Zhong came 3rd in the standings.
